Arizona Fall League Outlook Report – October 19, 2021

Austin Wells, C, Yankees – Wells was the Yankees’ first selection in the 2020 draft and spent his entire first professional season strengthening his credentials as a hitter. His numbers this season –.264 / .390 / .476 with 16 home runs – were particularly impressive considering Wells only played 71 games in college due to the pandemic and his sophomore status. eligible for draft. On Monday, Wells had a boisterous game with Surprise, recording a single, two doubles and a triple in five at-bat. The effort was Wells’ second game of four or more hits this season. The last came on September 5, when he had five hits against Greensboro.

Logan O’Hoppe, C, Phillies – Wells wasn’t the only receiver who showed up in the Surprise-Peoria tilt. On the other side, the Phillies prospect O’Hoppe had three hits, including a brace, and had his team’s three points. The 21-year-old, who the Phillies selected in the 23rd round of the 2018 New York High School Draft, has moved from High-A Jersey Shore to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. His 17 home runs were tied for second in the system behind lone outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz.

Matt Wallner, OF, Twins – Wallner missed two months of the year after having surgery to remove the hamatous bone from his right wrist. So far he uses the AFL to make up for lost time. The powerful outfielder went 3-for-5 with a home run – his second in the Fall League – on Monday in his team’s loss to Scottsdale. The home run left the stick at 97.8 mph and traveled about 393 feet to the opposite field. Not to be outdone, Wallner also had a 109.8 mph line in the game.

José Tena, SS, Guardians – Tena is one of a very talented group of intermediate prospects in the Cleveland system. The 20-year-old spent the entire season in High-A Lake County, recording 25 doubles and 16 homers as well as 10 stolen goals. His 117 strikeouts against 27 walks stand out like a red flag. He was 2-for-5 with a double Monday and produced three batting balls with exit speeds of over 100 mph.

Cole Waites, RHP, Giants – The San Francisco reliever threw just 13 shots in 0.1 inning Monday, but he made a strong impression. The southern Alabama right-handed product not only threw the hardest throw in the game (98.8 mph), but also threw all of its throws with an extension of over 7 feet, reaching 7.4 feet. Only 45 qualified big leagues had average extensions in 2021 of more than 7 feet.
