Arsenal midfielder sparks interest at home and abroad for January move

Arsenal midfielder sparks interest from Everton and Serie A giants ahead of possible January move

Everton and AS Roma interested in Maitland-Niles

Versatile Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles is again the subject of transfer interest as the January window approaches, with potential former contender Everton as well as Serie A giants AS Roma who would be passionate about the England international.

Both The Athletic and ESPN made mention of the link via David Ornstein and James olley, with the reliable pair citing Roma as being incredibly keen to bring the Hale End Academy graduate over on a loan deal in January.

While no formal offers or conditions have been sent or agreed between the Italian side and Arsenal, it would be surprising if the England midfielder refused the option of leaving the club – at least temporarily – given his flagrant lack of minutes this season under Mikel Arteta.

Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto has contacted Arsenal with a view to making a loan for the 24-year-old with Maitland-Niles open to the offer.

A career at Arsenal blocked

Despite coming through the youth ranks in the red half of north London, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has hardly progressed at Arsenal in recent seasons.

AMN played 20 times in the Gunners League in 2019-20, but recorded just 485 minutes in 11 appearances last season, which led to a January loan at West Brom where he played 15 times in about 1,200 minutes of action.

But an expected move to Everton this summer did not materialize after boss Mikel Arteta convinced Maitland-Niles to stay at the club, but the minutes were not granted to the London native, who is firmly seated in the hierarchical order under Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey, Sambi Lokonga or Mohamed Elneny.

If the terms were struck with one – or both – Everton and Roma, it seems unthinkable that Ainsley Maitland-Niles would pass up another chance to get what was once a fledgling career back on track.
