Brexit Donor Considers Leaving UK for Australia: Why? (2025)

Imagine this: A titan of industry, a man who poured £1 million into Brexit campaigns, is now seriously considering packing up and moving to Australia. Why? Because he believes the UK is in a state of 'chaos.' This is the story of Robert Edmiston, a man whose life and opinions offer a fascinating glimpse into the current state of Britain.

Lord Edmiston, ranked at 187th on the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated wealth of £855 million, built his fortune through the IM Group. This empire began with importing cars and expanded into property and finance. He was also made a Conservative life peer in 2011.

But here's where it gets controversial: Edmiston, a devout Christian, has also been a major donor to pro-Brexit campaigns, including a significant £850,000 contribution to Vote Leave before the 2016 EU referendum.

Now, with his son taking on a larger role in the family business, Lord Edmiston is spending more time outside the UK. He semi-retired to Portugal in 2016 and has built a property in Australia. He and his wife are now contemplating permanent residency, citing family ties, a warmer climate, and, most notably, concerns about the NHS and the UK's tax system.

He praised the Australian healthcare system, which operates under a hybrid model where more than half the population has private health insurance, contrasting it with the UK's NHS. He stated that in Australia, getting a doctor's appointment and necessary tests is incredibly quick. He contrasted this with the UK, where, in March, the NHS waiting list for hospital treatment stood at 6.26 million patients.

And this is the part most people miss: Lord Edmiston didn't mince words. He questioned why the UK can't replicate Australia's healthcare efficiency, citing 'sacred cows' and a system he believes is 'broken.' He also criticized the UK's tax system, arguing that it discourages business growth. He pointed out that IM Group paid almost £14.5 million in tax on its £56 million profit in 2024, according to the latest accounts.

He expressed concerns about potential tax rises in the upcoming autumn Budget, stating that the uncertainty is hindering business decisions. He believes that the government is in 'full panic mode' and that the only solution being considered is more taxes. He also said that the public is not going to buy as much and it is going to be bad for the industry.

He also acknowledged that the Conservatives 'didn't do a good job last time around,' and the country is in chaos.

So, what do you think? Is Lord Edmiston's assessment of the UK fair? Are his concerns about the NHS and the tax system justified? Do you agree or disagree with his views on the political landscape? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
