Two men charged with murder over Chin Swee Road fight that left 56-year-old man dead
SINGAPORE – Two men, Tan Boon Hui, 58, and Poh Choon Kiat, 59, have been charged with murder following a violent altercation in Chin Swee Road that resulted in the tragic death of a 56-year-old man.
The incident occurred between 1 am and 3 am on November 8th, 2025, on the 17th floor of Block 51 Chin Swee Road. The duo was charged via video link on November 9th, with Tan appearing from his hospital bed at Changi General Hospital, where he was warded, and Poh being held in a different location.
Tan, who spoke in Mandarin, informed the court through an interpreter that his leg was swollen and that he was unable to move around. The judge advised him that he could receive treatment from the doctors at the hospital.
The police received a call for assistance at the block around 3:10 am on November 8th. Upon arrival, they found the victim lying injured outside his 17th-floor flat, unconscious and later pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital.
In addition to the murder charge, Poh is also alleged to have committed drug offenses, which will be referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau. The third man, a friend of the victim, has not been charged but is assisting with investigations after being arrested for affray.
The police seized two knives, indicating that the victim was stabbed. Knife crime has been on the rise in Singapore, with 75 incidents reported in the first half of 2025, up from 59 in the same period in 2024, and a total of 131 incidents for the whole of 2024.
A recent tragic incident occurred on September 24th, when a woman died after a violent knife attack in Yishun, allegedly over a noise dispute between neighbors. A man was charged with murder over this incident.
Tan and Poh's cases are expected to be heard again on November 14th. If convicted of murder, they face the death penalty.
This case highlights the increasing prevalence of violent crimes involving knives in Singapore, raising concerns about public safety and the need for effective measures to prevent such incidents.
