China's Clean Energy Revolution: How It's Impacting the Global South (2025)

The world is undergoing a dramatic shift, and clean energy is at the forefront. While the United States takes a step back, China is stepping up, reshaping the global energy landscape, particularly in the Global South.

The recent United Nations climate conference in Brazil saw a notable absence: the United States, sending no high-level representatives to COP30. This decision follows the Trump administration's withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. However, while the U.S. seems to be retreating from clean energy initiatives, the rest of the world is charging ahead.

Experts suggest that the U.S.'s shift has created a significant opportunity for competitors, especially China. Although President Xi Jinping didn't attend COP30, China's influence was still strongly felt. A recent Semafor report highlighted the inroads China's clean-tech industry has made in Latin America, with Brazil even choosing Chinese EVs to transport attendees, signaling that the world is moving forward, even without U.S. leadership.

Globally, renewable energy deployment and electrification efforts are making historic gains. Renewables surpassed coal as the world's primary source of electricity earlier this year, a monumental achievement. China alone has added 300 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity since the beginning of this year – almost five times the entire renewable capacity of the United Kingdom.

But it's not just China, Europe, and other wealthy nations leading the charge. Many developing countries are rapidly embracing clean energy. Nations across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East are becoming some of the fastest-growing adopters of clean energy worldwide.

This trend is fueled by the changing economics of renewable energy, particularly the affordability of solar power. With a flood of cheap solar panels and turbine components from China, countries like Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Morocco, Kenya, and Namibia have surpassed the United States in their clean energy progress. According to Yale Environment 360, approximately 63 percent of emerging markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America now source more power from solar than the U.S.

CNN reports that some countries are undergoing stunningly fast energy transitions, adding solar so quickly that it's become a major electricity source within years, not decades. Pakistan is a prime example, becoming one of the world's largest new solar power adopters almost overnight.

This rapid transition wouldn't be possible without the plummeting costs of wind and solar technologies, which, in turn, are due to mass-scale Chinese manufacturing. Lars Nitter Havro of Rystad Energy told CNN that emerging economies are seizing the opportunity to leapfrog into the next energy era, benefiting from the scale of Chinese manufacturing.

China's dominance in clean energy manufacturing has solidified its control over global clean energy supply chains and energy influence in emerging economies. This dominance is also crucial for keeping decarbonization within reach for many nations, especially since other plans to make the energy transition affordable, such as climate finance, have largely failed.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could China's dominance in clean energy become a new form of economic control? What are the potential geopolitical implications of this shift? What do you think about the rapid expansion of clean energy in developing countries, and what challenges do you foresee? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
