Is Manchester City's Dominance Fading? Pascal Gross Thinks So! | Champions League Preview (2025)

Here’s a bold statement: Manchester City, once the seemingly unstoppable force in English football, might just be more vulnerable now than ever before. But here’s where it gets controversial—is this truly a decline, or simply a phase of reinvention? Borussia Dortmund midfielder Pascal Gross certainly thinks there’s a shift. Speaking ahead of their Champions League clash, Gross, who spent seven years in the Premier League with Brighton before joining Dortmund in 2024, shared his insights. During his time in England, City dominated, clinching the title in all but one season. Yet, Gross now believes, 'They’re more beatable than they were a few years ago.'

And this is the part most people miss—City’s recent form supports this claim. Last season, they finished third, a staggering 13 points behind champions Liverpool. This campaign, they’re already six points adrift of league leaders Arsenal after just 10 games. Gross attributes this to a transition phase, noting the departure of key players who were instrumental to their success. 'They’re perhaps in a phase of reinvention,' he said, though he was quick to add that City still boasts 'absolute world-class players' in their squad.

One name that stands out? Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, who left Dortmund for City in 2022, has been in sensational form, scoring 26 goals in 16 games this season. But Gross dismisses the idea that City relies too heavily on Haaland. 'He’s an absolute world-class player, but you have to stop him collectively,' he explained. 'City has enormous quality in every position.'

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to balance defense with their own attacking style. 'We have to watch out for Haaland, but if we only barricade ourselves at the back, City has the qualities to break us down,' Kovac said. 'We’ll stay true to our game.'

Both teams have started their Champions League campaigns strongly, with two wins and a draw each in their opening fixtures. But the question remains: Is Manchester City truly more beatable, or are they simply evolving? What do you think? Is this a genuine decline, or just a temporary dip in form? Let’s spark a debate—share your thoughts in the comments below!
