Baseball goes to UMBC for the weekend

The Saint Joseph baseball team will hit the road for the first time this weekend as the Hawks visit UMBC for a three-game series. The teams will meet on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. before playing a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.

LAST DEATH: Saint Joseph’s took two of three in a season-opening series against Quinnipiac at Smithson Field…Nate Thomas opened things up Friday with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth as the Hawks cruised to a 13-3 victory on Opening Day… Ryan Cesarini made his first collegiate start and had five runs on Saturday, while Thomas again gave SJU breathing room with a two-run homer to throw a six-run eighth en route to a 15-8 win… The visitors would go on to win the final on Sunday, but not before Thomas hit his third home run in as many days.

UMBC lost its first three games of the season, all by a single point… On Friday, the Retrievers opened the season with a 10-9 loss at Navy before falling to the Midshipmen, 11-10, in 12 innings Saturday… Wednesday night, a walk-in single gave Maryland a 3-2 win.

LEADERS: Thomas and Brett Callahan both hit .500 for the Hawks against the Bobcats, with Callahan and Jake Artz lead the team with six runs scored… Thomas’ three home runs and eight runs scored led the Hawks and tied them for first and second in the league, respectively… Callahan also tied for the league lead with three stolen bases…mike falco whipped up nine batters Friday to lead the Atlantic 10… Falco and Ian McCole pitched four innings apiece in the opener, while Luke Smith went five for the win on Saturday.

Myles Nicholson leads the Retrievers with a .462 average, four runs scored and five RBIs… Luke Johnson pitched five shutout innings for UMBC on Opening Day, while Keegan Leffler leads the team with five strikeouts.

ALL-TIME SERIES: The Hawks are 2-0 against UMBC, with the only meetings between the two coming in 1998… The Hawks swept both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 4-1, 16-10.

REMARKABLE: Thomas and Falco were honored by the Atlantic 10 as League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively… Thomas was also recognized as a college baseball National Player of the Week newspaper and as Philadelphia Baseball Review DI Offensive Player of the Week… In the first weekend of the season, the Hawks led the Atlantic 10 in batting average, runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and fielding percentage while tied at the head of the circuits.
