LAST MEETING: These teams last met on April 12, 2015, a 6-2 loss for A&T that clinched a weekend series victory for the Lancers, 2-1.

WHO DID: Junior infielder Anthony Henning has been a staple offensively for A&T. He’s second in the Deep South in batting (.387) and is coming off a 2-for-4 win at two doubles and two RBIs against Power Five opponent NC State. Hennings also landed his first home run last weekend against Canisius. He leads the team with 10 multi-hit games.

AGGIE OVERVIEW: The Aggies are coming off a 5-3 midweek loss to ACC opponent NC State on Tuesday.

A&T returns home this weekend to #TheWar, where they have won all nine of their games this season. They found the majority of their success in weekend series games. They are 7-2 over their last nine games and have outscored their opponents 67-34.

The hitters have shined in those games, posting eight or more runs in four of the games. The Aggies have two players who are hitting .300 or better in Hennings and Bussey and are third in the Big South in batting average per team (.272).

Pitching was also a plus for A&T. The Aggies lead the conference in ERA (4.07). They have seven pitchers with sub-5.00 ERAs and four with more than 20 strikeouts.

The head coach Ben room is now in his eighth year at A&T and has a 150-203 (.425) record.

OVERVIEW OF LAUNCHERS: The Lancers dropped a midweek game against the VCU Rams on Tuesday, 6-5. The loss drops Longwood to 0-7 on the road.

In the preseason poll, Big South head coaches voted for the Lancers to finish 11th in the league. They were the only team chosen to finish below A&T.

Longwood is second in the Deep South in batting average (.293), just .001 behind leader USC Upstate. This year, they scored a league-best 167 points, with 24 points in a single game this season (3/9 vs. Saint Peters; 3/15 vs. Norfolk State).

Redshirt junior first baseman Hunter Gilliam leads the league in homers (7) and RBIs (23) and bats .288 for the Lancers this season. However, he has just six hits on his last 25 hits and hadn’t homered since March 6 before breaking that streak on Sunday against UNC Asheville.

The Lancers haven’t gotten quite the same production from their pitching team, which ranks sixth in the conference in ERA (5.90). They’ve allowed eight or more runs seven times this year, including a season-worst 19 against NC State on Feb. 23.

Longwood’s arms are led by sophomore right-hander Logan Berrier, who sports a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings pitched. Fellow RHP redshirt sophomore Andrew Potojecki sports a team-high 22 strikeouts.

Chad Oxendine is in his first year as head baseball coach at Longwood after a three-year stint as director of baseball operations and player development at Coastal Carolina (2018-2021).

QUOTE: “Big time in our program as we open Big South play this weekend. I’m excited to see our guys come out and focus on one game at a time and play clean, complementary baseball. Longwood did some good things this year and is at the top of the league, statistically. It should be a great test, and we can’t wait to see Aggie Nation out there strong to start a new era in league play.

News and Notes:

  • A&T is 3-7 in its last 10 games against Longwood.
  • The Lancers are 0-10 in North Carolina this year.
  • Maynard has reached base safely in seven straight games.
  • A&T is an extremely young team, with 27 of their 38 (.711) registered players being underclassmen.
  • Longwood assistant coach Brad Mincey spent the last two seasons at arch-rival A&T North Carolina Central before the Eagles ended their program. Mincey worked with the pitching team that finished in the MEAC’s top two for the ERA in consecutive seasons (2020-21).
