Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies will approve sports betting, becoming the first active MLB player to do so
For the first time, an active Major League Baseball player will sponsor a sportsbook in the United States.
MaximBet and Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon have entered into a partnership that will feature the four-time All-Star as a brand ambassador in marketing campaigns, promotions and social media content and at fan events for betting sports online.
Blackmon, per MLB policy, is not authorized to specifically promote betting on baseball, but may endorse sports betting in general.
He is the first player to take advantage of the sports betting opportunities that have been included in the new baseball collective bargaining agreement. Marketing and sponsorship deals with sports betting were limited to league and team entities, but prohibited to players and coaches prior to the CBA which was implemented this offseason. MLB players, coaches and staff remain banned from betting on baseball.
The deal between Blackmon and MaximBet is the latest example of MLB joining the growing legal sports betting market in the United States. Legal bookmakers operate in 30 states and the District of Columbia, and several MLB ballparks are setting up physical sports betting spaces.
In a recent SportsCenter interview, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred touted the future of in-play baseball betting.
“We see it primarily as a form of growing fan engagement. It’s an additional way for our fans to interact with the game,” Manfred said. “I think in-play betting is going to be a big thing. I think if you talk to experts in the field, they don’t see outcome betting as a major growth area. It’s actually in-play betting, so-called prop betting, which is going to be the area of growth, and most of that betting will be on mobile devices.
MaximBet, a subsidiary of lifestyle brand Maxim, is a new online sports betting site in the United States and currently only operates in Colorado. He announced expansion plans in Iowa and Indiana.
“Learning more about MaximBet, I knew it was absolutely the right brand for me,” Blackmon said in a statement announcing the partnership. “MaximBet has truly connected with the local Colorado community, and I look forward to having fun with MaximBet and surprising fans with amazing ‘money can’t buy’ experiences all season long.”
