Former Newcastle Council Planning Director Garry Fielding will chair the New South Wales Government’s new regional housing working group. Deputy Prime Minister John Barilaro announced on Friday that Fielding would start work immediately, leading a task force to tackle housing shortages in regional areas. “With the pandemic transforming the way we live and work, we have seen a noticeable change in the number of people leaving cities for a drastic change or tree change in the regions,” Barilaro said. “But, with that, the prices are skyrocketing. That’s why we set up this task force to provide independent advice to provide more housing statewide.” Mr Fielding is a former Planning Director for the City of Newcastle, Maitland and Woollahra and Chairman of the Hunter Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Committee. Planning Minister Rob Stokes said Fielding would identify constraints to housing supply, diversity and affordability in regions and deliver his report to the government in September. “We asked Mr Fielding to examine the obstacles in the planning system preventing new housing from coming to market in the regions, and to identify solutions that will boost supply and encourage greater choice of housing.” said Mr Stokes. “Mr. Fielding’s recommendations will allow us to partner with voluntary advice on new ways to plan and provide more housing opportunities in our thriving regions.” Housing Minister Melinda Pavey said Fielding had a reputation for “getting results in planning.” “For more than 40 years, he has acquired extensive experience as a city planner at state and local level, the latter occupying senior positions in municipal and regional councils,” she said. declared.
