Four cardinals named finalists for Rawlings Gold Glove Award

Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., has announced the finalists for the 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Award®, recognizing the best individual performance on the field at every position in the American League® and National League®. The Cardinals had four players named finalists: Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Tommy Edman and Brendan Donovan. Edman was a finalist for both the second base and the utility new player award.

The winners will be announced during a special one-hour “Baseball Tonight” broadcast on ESPN on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 5 p.m. ET. The show will air on the field before Game 4 of the MLB® World Series from the host National League ballpark.

While the award originated in 1957, Rawlings began highlighting the top three defensemen at each position as runners-up in 2011. This season, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians and Yankees New York are tied for the most finalists, with five positions per team.

This year also marks the first time that utility players have been included in the list of finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Rawlings announced the addition of the utility role to the list of award recipients last month.

“The 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists perfectly represent an unforgettable and exciting baseball season marked by incredible displays of defense,” said Mike Thompson, Rawlings chief marketing officer. “Rawlings congratulates all deserving finalists, and we look forward to naming the next class of winners considered ‘Best in Business®'”

To determine the winners of the 18 defensive position awards, each team’s manager and up to six coaches on his staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their league and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added the SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, which represents approximately 25% of the overall selection total, with manager and coach votes continuing to hold the majority.

To identify utility award winners, Rawlings worked with SABR to create a specialized defensive formula separate from the traditional selection process for post Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners. Using the SABR formula and additional defensive stats, Rawlings will select a utility winner from each league.

The 2022 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists are:

The 2022 finalists include nine former American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners and 10 former National League winners.

Following the special Rawlings Gold Glove Award television announcement on ESPN on Tuesday, November 1, fans can vote for their favorite defensive player in each league to determine who will be named the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™ winners. A combination of national fan voting and SDI will determine who wins the honor.

Voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award presented by SABR will begin online at on Tuesday, November 1 at 6 p.m. ET and will remain open until Wednesday, November 9 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners will be revealed at the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on Friday, November 11.
