Gavin Cross named to U.S. 2022 preseason second all-star team
Cross garnered the highest praise among the CCA outfielder, dividing the league’s class of eight preseason All-Americans in all positions – including five placed in the first and second teams. The Hokies six-foot-three left-handed stick was also one of eight NCAA Division I outfielders who made second or higher team positions.
After becoming Tech’s first All-American Freshman in eight years after the shortened 2020 season, Cross scored a .345 batting average, hit .621 and recorded a .415 base percentage in his first campaign. full college in 2021. From late March to mid-April, he featured a 15-game hitting streak in 12 ACC contests that was highlighted by his 4-on-6 round at East Tennessee State.
By the end of the season, Cross had punctuated Tech’s offense in points (48), hits (70), doubles (13), trebles (five), homers (11) and stolen goals (nine). A qualified rookie for his COVID-19 bonus year, he became the first-ever winner of the Hokies’ first All-ACC team in tandem with him receiving consideration from the ACC All-Freshman team.
New to summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League – the nation’s premier amateur college tour – Cross moved on to USA Baseball’s Stars and Stripes series in July, where he shone in the national showcase. Against the elite of college baseball, he led the Team USA tour in batting average (0.455), home runs (four), RBI (13) and stroke percentage (0.879).
Cross is widely regarded as a top varsity prospect for the 2022 MLB Draft. On the college player selection charts, he is ranked No. 3 by Perfect game, n ° 5 by D1Base-ball, n ° 10 by MLB pipeline and n ° 14 by Baseball America.
