Mariners win season opener | Georgia Coastal College of Athletics

BRUNSWICK, Georgia – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (1-0) defeated the Montreat College Cavaliers (0-1) 5-1 in the season and home opener. The second match of the doubleheader was canceled due to rain.

Notable stats from the first game:

  • Leadoff hitter Sarah Thinger finished with a season-high three hits for the season opener. She also added an RBI and a run to her stat line. Thinger went 3-4 at the plate.
  • Kayla Rowell also recorded a multi-hit game. She went 2-3 at home plate adding a run and two RBIs.
  • Hayley Dickerson pitched a full game for the Mariners. She allowed four hits, one run and two walks after facing 28 batters.
  • Bryce Peacock, McCall Maret, Rori Rhodes and Malarie Peacock have also recorded successes in the game.

Summary of the game:

Both teams were left scoreless after the first set. Coastal held Montreat without a hit and the Mariners had a hit in the first.

The Mariners went on the board with two runs on two hits and two errors in the second inning. Rowell started the inning with a single down the middle and advanced to second on a field error on Kagee’s stick. Rhodes then also reached base by fielder’s pick on a second error, loading the bases with Rowell, Kagee and Rhodes. Mr. Peacock landed a single moving every runner one base and recording an RBI. Then on Bellflower’s stick, Kagee scored. After the start of the second, the score was 2-0.

The Cavaliers de Montreat responded at the start of the third round with a point on their own. With two runners on base on walks, the Cavalier’s third batter in the inning took a swing down the middle to advance a runner from second to home.

The game remained 2-1 until late in the fifth when the Mariners added two runs on three hits. Thinger started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a B. Peacock bunt single. On a sacrificial bunt, the runners both moved to scoring positions. On Rowell’s hard-hit single, the quick pair Peacock and Thinger scored to make it 4-1.

Coastal Georgia added its final run in the bottom of the sixth. Rori Rhodes hit a single, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrificial bunt from Mr. Peacock. Thinger brought it home with a two-out double.

The final score of the match was 5-1. Coastal Georgia finished with nine hits, four RBIs, one strikeout on 27 at-bats.

Second game – Suspended after the second inning

Due to the lack of innings played, the game will be uncountable for the team record and for statistics. However, after two innings of play, the Mariners had secured a 6-0 lead.

Following: The Mariners will face RV Truett-McConnell at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on February 9and Brunswick High School softball field. The two teams have faced each other 13 times in school history. The Mariners edged the Bears by seven wins to six losses. The last time the Mariners played the Bears, they lost 9-1.
