- Devdutt Padikkal could replace Shikhar Dhawan in Indian squad for third ODI
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar could also rest for the benefit of Navdeep Saini
- Yuzvendra Chahal, who did very well in the first two ODIs, could be replaced by Rahul Chahar
Despite the roster of a so-called “second chain” team, India did not take long to conclude the ODI series fate against Sri Lanka. With the first two ODIs under their belt, Shikhar Dhawan & Co. now have the opportunity to make some changes to the squad and give the bench players a chance to measure themselves.
Shikhar Dhawan, as the team captain, is unlikely to put himself on the bench while Prithvi Shaw also deserves a team extension. Still, former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta believes Dhawan should make way for Devdutt Padikkal in the squad.
A few other changes that could be made to the team will likely come in the form of a rhythm machine and a crimper. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains indispensable to India in the limited formats, Yuzvendra Chahal impressed enough in the first two ODIs. The duo, however, could rest for the final ODI given that the series is already decided.
“In my opinion it could be Yuzvendra Chahal because Rahul Chahar is sitting outside, who played well in the last round. Maybe he can get a game before the T20Is so India has his options ready.” former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta said. cited by India Today.
Navdeep Saini could replace Bhuvi in the rhythm unit while Rahul Chahar could make his ODI debut if the team management decides to remove Chahal from the final ODI.
“You have someone like Navdeep Saini warming up the bench. (Chetan) Sakariya is also sitting outside. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar played well and the management can both rest or one of them just to try. Navdeep Saini, ”Dasgupta said. on the possible change of the pace-bowling unit.
The idea behind the Sri Lanka tour was to give a few fringe players a chance to shine. Therefore, players like Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Manish Pandey are unlikely to be rested for the game. Hardik Pandya, who reportedly had a back problem during the second ODI, was able to rest.
Samson can take his place in the squad but Nitish Rana also remains a candidate. Reserve openers – Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad – might have to wait for their chance.
India will likely play XI for the 3rd ODI: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan (c), Ishan Kishan, Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Krunal Pandya, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Rahul Chahar
