Paul Stirling and Alex Hales combine batting fireworks to bring victory to Islamabad United
Zalmi was completely outplayed by Islamabad United in Sunday’s game.
Islamabad United started their campaign in the 2022 edition of the Pakistani Super League (PSL) on a winning note by overcoming Peshawar Zalmi by nine wickets. Chasing a target of 169 set by Zalmi, United crossed the finish line with 25 deliveries remaining.
Dynamic flyhalf Alex Hales played a quick shot for his team. The Englishman scored a game-winning 54-ball 82* for his side and stayed on until the end to lead Islamabad beyond the finish line. Apart from Hales, the Irishman Paul Stirling also played a stellar shot contributing with 57 carries on 25 balls and also laying a solid foundation for Islamabad United with an opening position of 112 carries with Alex Hales.
All Peshawar Zalmi bowlers were left without a wicket as Paul Stirling’s only wicket was lost due to a runout. Interestingly, Stirling was also named player of the match for his enterprising shot comprising seven fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 228.
Sherfane Rutherford’s half-century helps Peshawar Zalmi after 168/6
Earlier, after being asked to strike first, Peshawar Zalmi posted a bout total of 168/6 on the board from his 20 overs. Sherfane Rutherford completed the saving act for Peshawar after being reduced to 35/4 just after Powerplay and scored the best score for his side with a vital hit of 70 unbeaten runs from 46 deliveries. He added 73 runs for the fifth wicket with veteran Shoaib Malik scoring 25 from 22.

Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting also contributed towards the end of the innings scoring 26 runs from 17 deliveries. Faheem Ashraf was the bowlers’ choice for Islamabad United with figures of 2/23 from his four overs at a save rate of 5.8. Hasan Ali also recorded two scalps each of his four overs. He finished with 2/34 at an 8.5 save rate. Mohammad Wasim and skipper Shadab Khan each took a wicket of their four overs quota, conceding 37 and 28 runs respectively.
Peshawar Zalmi was aiming for a second straight win in PSL 2022. They beat Quetta Gladiators in their season opener on Friday by five wickets. Nevertheless, Zalmi was completely outplayed by Islamabad United in Sunday’s game.
