Ravi Bishnoi has age on his side; should now work to become undetachable: Sunil Gavaskar
NEW DELHI: With his sharp and aggressive mindset, young foot player Ravi Bishnoi has been one of India’s finds in the T20I this year. Since his debut against West Indies in Kolkata this year, where he won the ‘player of the match’ award, Bishnoi has picked 16 wickets in 10 T20Is, averaging 17.12 and saving rate of 7.08 .
Many expected Bishnoi to be in the Indian side for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia next month. But that was not to be the case as Bishnoi was designated as one of four reserves for the October-November mega event.
India‘s legendary striker Sunil Gavaskar believes Bishnoi shouldn’t be discouraged by not making the World Cup 15-man squad as he has age on his side.
He urged the Jodhpur-based leg spinner to perform now in upcoming matches in a way that becomes ‘impossible’.
“Well, he has age on his side. There is another T20 World Cup in a few years (2024, in the West Indies and the United States). There are so many T20 World Cups that he can play in the future. He should now perform in such a way that he becomes invincible. So that’s the only way to look at it. He’s a young man, it’s a good experience for him to know that he can’t get into every team,” Gavaskar told India Today after India team announcement.
Deepening India’s squad for the showpiece event, Gavaskar backed all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who delivered with bat and ball in India’s recent T20I wins, to be the team’s asset. and replicate what former all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri did for the team in winning the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Cricket Championship in Australia.
“Yeah, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with bat and ball in the whole tournament. Some good catches too. Hardik Pandya is able to do that Don’t forget, mid-run, he also does some electrifying run-outs.”
“Direct hits at the end of the bowler, catching the batter inches away. It’s not just the bowling and batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, the fielding aspect that could transform the game in India. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s like the Ravi Shastri of 1985, if he’s like the champion of champions.”
Gavaskar signed off saying India looked like a great unit with the addition of right-hand point guards Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel while urging fans to back the 15-man squad for the tournament.
“It looks like a very good team. With the arrival of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, it looks like India will be able to defend their totals. India had problems trying to defend his totals. These two coming stalwarts will definitely give India the edge when defending the totals.”
“Deepak Chahar is a stand out name but they have also retained Arshdeep Singh who gives a left arm option in attack. As I said he is a good selection. We can still spit on this thing and that thing. But now the selection is made, it’s the India team. So let’s not ask why not this, why not that? We should support this team 100%. Now that the selection is made , it’s our team, support it 100%.
