The Delta Record | Lady Bucs defeats George Washington, University to advance to 15-1

TENNERTON— The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers defeated the host George Washington Patriots lacrosse team by a final score of 18-4 in Thursday’s championship game.

Lady Bucs’ highly decorated senior star Miranda Greene lived up to her reputation as the best player in the state, toying with the competition as she scored four goals and showed off her deft playmaking touch by delivering two assists to represent a team high of 6 points. The evening.

Senior Hannah Walton scored a team-leading five goals to lead the team in scoring, while senior Reese Hutson scored one goal and provided three assists. Sophomore Kennedy Defibaugh scored three goals, junior Paula Vaugh scored two goals, senior Kaylee O’Conner scored one, senior Kierra Arbogaast scored one, while recovering three ground balls. Sophomore Heather Hayes scored a goal to complete the Lady Bucs score. As a team, the Lady Bucs scored 18 on 24 shots on goal, recording a kill-effective shooting percentage of 75%.

Gaidian Adams led the way for the Lady Bucs in terms of fielding, the disruptive senior defender fought her way to collect a team-high six ground balls and prompted two Patriot turnovers. Coach Greene’s team was also helped by the particularly strong defensive performances of second defender Kaylee Black who fielded five balls on the ground and senior Mashae Bowser who fielded three balls on the ground.

Sophomore Hannah Crihfield played 50 minutes to defend the Lady Bucs net. Crihfield took the win after registering 14 saves and allowing just four goals on 18 shots on goal.

With the win, Coach Greene takes the Lady Bucs to a 14-1 season record. After another landslide victory, the Lady Buccaneers turned their attention to their next game as they took on the host university to take on the University Hawks in a non-league game on Monday, May 2 at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Field. Once again, the extremely talented Lady Bucs lacrosse team routed the visiting Hawks, 16-5.

The Lady Bucs took the dominating victory as their star senior midfielder once again stole the show. Greene was a statistical marvel, doing everything to help his team claim their fourth straight win. The versatile senior scored a team-high seven goals while collecting six ground balls to lead the team in this category as well.

Walton scored five goals, while providing one assist. The eldest recorded her second straight five-goal game, making a strong case for Athlete of the Week honors this week.

Defibaugh had a crucial impact on both attack and defense for coach Greene’s Lady Bucs, scoring two goals and fielding three ground balls. Adams scored one goal, while living up to his high level of play on the defensive end by fielding five balls on the ground and causing a team record two turnovers. Hudson scored a goal to round out the Lady Bucs scoring tally in their win over University.

The victory moves the Lady Bucs to 15-1 on the year as the playoffs draw near. Collectively, the Lady Bucs have proven they have the grit, the determination, the will and the heart to bring a championship to Tennerton. Only time will tell if the Lady Bucs can deliver on their unlimited playoff promise.
