ULM Softball Claims Saturday’s Plainsman Invitational Victory
AUBURN, Alabama – The ULM Softball team (12-3) rebounded from Friday’s loss to No. 21 Auburn with a 3-2 victory over Bradley in its only game Saturday in the Plainsman Invitational. Second year Madison Blount had two RBIs, leading to a single run in the second inning and the game-winner in the fourth, and Kinsey Kackley records its second victory of the season.
“Today was complete teamwork,” said the ULM head coach. Molly Fishtner. “We struggled a bit with the energy in the dugout and I challenged Kendall (Morton) to hype the dugout today. We started very rocky again defensively today but the energy never wavered. For the majority of the game, we had the momentum, and ultimately that’s what drove us to win the baseball game. There were a lot of key moments for us in the game. today, but the energy is what excited me the most.
Bradley took advantage of two Warhawk errors late in the first to score the first run of the game. Lead off batter Camryn Monteer singled out and moved into base position on a pitching error. Brave Jordy van der Werf reached first base on a fielding error, then Monteer and van de Werf went third and second, respectively. A Samantha Smith single brought both Braves to the plate for a 2-0 lead over Bradley.
The ULM responded to Bradley’s scores with a race at the start of the second. First-year student Alexis Chavez arrived at base with a bunt on the left side and moved to second on a sophomore sacrifice Kelsey Giddens. Blount’s brace brought Chavez home for the first leg of the ULM tournament and 2-1.
Warhawks fourth inning early batter Jacelyn Buck picked and moved to second on the Chavez field. Buck scored on Kelsey Gidden’s doubled to left field to tie the game at 2-2, then Giddens scored the third run, the eventual game-winner, on Blount’s single in the middle. ULM leads 3-2 the rest of the way
In the circle, Kackley had control of the game and kept Bradley off the scoreboard by snuffing out any threat for six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Bradley charged the bases with a single, a double and a walk. Kackley hit the pinch hitter for the second out and Gianni Hulet came to face Bradley’s Monteer to retire the team and prevent the Braves from recording runs. Kackley came back to close the seventh with three straight outs.
Bradley’s Camryn Schaller was the losing pitcher of the game, allowing three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
The Warhawks will face Plainsman Invitational host No. 21 Auburn at 2:00 p.m. CT Sunday at Jane B. Moore Field. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+ with live stats for the weekend’s final game available on the softball schedule page on ULMWarhawks.com.
